Educators‚ researchers‚ and students of all ages find the Blue Ridge Heritage Archive to be an invaluable resource in their study of folk culture. The Archive serves as a permanent repository for photographs‚ audio recordings‚ video recordings‚ books‚ manuscripts‚ and other documents related to regional folkways. Holdings date from 1780 to the present. Ever growing‚ the collection touches upon nearly every aspect of Virginia folklife–from Tidewater gospel singing to Shenandoah Valley German dialect to Southwest Virginia historical crafts and trades. The archive is open weekdays by appointment only. Sometimes the Blue Ridge Institute houses exhibits pertaining to the traditional music of the region.
